Griffith’s Valuation Land Records and the Search for Irish Ancestors

When tracing Irish family history, land records can be one of the most useful ways to connect a family name to a real place.

The National Archives of Ireland explains that Griffith’s Valuation was the first full-scale valuation of property in Ireland, with publication dates between 1847 and 1864. It includes occupiers of land and buildings, those from whom property was leased, and details about the amount and value of property held.

For family historians, Griffith’s Valuation is especially valuable because it can place an ancestor in a specific location at a time when many other records may be limited or missing.

The records can provide information about where occupiers lived, the size and quality of farms, the type of houses, and changes in families or properties over time through later revision documents. This means researchers can sometimes move from a surname to a townland, and from a townland to a landscape.
