Discover the Derry City Wall

The Derry City Walls are one of Northern Ireland’s most important historical landmarks. They are also part of one of the best walled cities in Europe. For visitors, walking along the walls offers a chance to explore centuries of history while looking across both the old and modern parts of Derry.

Built between 1613 and 1619, the walls have remained an important part of the city for more than four centuries. Today, they continue to welcome visitors from around the world.

The Origins of the Derry City Walls

The Derry City Walls were constructed during the Plantation of Ulster. Their original purpose was to protect the English and Scottish settlers who lived in the city. The walls stretch for approximately 1.5 kilometers and surround Derry’s old city center. One of their most remarkable features is that they remain completely intact. This is rare among historic walled cities in Europe today.

The Walls and the Siege of Derry

The walls played an important role during the Siege of Derry in 1689. This was one of the most significant events in Irish and British history.

For more than 100 days, the city resisted attack. During this period, the walls became closely connected with endurance and identity.

Walking the Walls Today

A walk along the Derry City Walls also offers panoramic views of the surrounding city. From the walls, visitors can see historic buildings and churches alongside modern streets. They can also look towards the River Foyle.

These views bring different parts of Derry together. Historic structures stand beside modern city life, showing how the past and present continue to exist in the same place.

The walk therefore offers both scenery and perspective. Visitors can enjoy the views while also thinking about the events and communities that have shaped Derry.

Today, the walls stand within a city that continues to value peace, culture, and community. They provide visitors with a way to explore Derry’s past while also seeing the modern city from above.

Walking the walls is therefore more than a chance to view a historic landmark. It is an opportunity to understand how Derry has changed across the centuries and how its history continues to shape the city today.
